Filipino workers 2008 remittances up 13.7 percent
MANILA, Philippines - Filipinos working overseas sent home $16.4 billion in 2008 _ 13.7 percent more than in the previous year _ despite the global economic downturn, the Philippine central bank said Monday.
The figure, which comprises 10.4 percent of the country's gross domestic product, surpassed the bank's forecast of a 13 percent rise to US$16.3 billion. Nearly 10 percent of the country's 90 million people work overseas, and the money they send home is a key contributor to the Philippine economy.

Obama plan for US property crisis expected next week
The Obama administration is considering a number of proposals to help distressed US property owners which are expected to be announced next week.
One of several options being discussed is subsidizing lenders who cut the interest rate on mortgages using part of $50 billion that has been set aside for a property owner relief programme.

Luxury property prices in Manila expected to fall back in 2009
High end property prices in the Philippines are expected to suffer a sharp downturn in 2009, especially in Manila, because of the economic downturn, it is claimed.
Industry analysts are expecting demand from foreign property investors and experts to fall and this will have a major impact on the real estate markets.
According to Christian Cruz, senior economist at Global Property Guide, prices of luxury units in Manila could be affected as expats are called back to their countries because of ongoing job cutbacks.

New regulation postponed in Philippines amid fears about impact on property market
The Philippines real estate sector has been granted a reprieve from the implementation of a new accounting rule which would have significantly affected bottom lines amid a global financial downturn.
The new regulation,which states that property buyers' payments cannot be booked as revenues until projects are completed, would have taken effect in January. It has now been put off until 2012 as it is felt it would have had a negative effect on the property market.
